Sarod recital - Saturday, August 27, 2005; 6:00 p.m.

Sarod recital by DEBOJYOTI BOSE
accompanied on tabla by
Tabla Maestro Pandit KUMAR BOSE

PANDIT KUMAR BOSE

Born in a God-gifted musical family of Calcutta, Pandit Kumar Bose was initiated in tabla by his father Pandit Biswanath Bose, who was a distinguished tabla "Nawaz" of Benaras Gharana that he mastered under the stewardship of its legendary exponent Pandit Kanthe Maharaj. His mother, Srimati Bharati Bose, is the disciple of great Ustad Dabir Khan (Bincar) & Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. After his father's untimely demise, he came under the tutelage of Pandit Kishen Maharaj, the living legend of Benaras Gharana.

The superiority of Pandit Bose's genius is his ability to evolve a distinctive style of his own without diluting the purity of tradition in which psyche the audience becomes captive. This is most evident in his negotiations with the "Bnaya" (Bass Drum). His performance, as it is told is as pleasing as a 'raga' or melodious song. He is as much facile in accompaniment with music (vocal & instrumental) & dances as in Solos. He has accompanied all top Grade celebrity artists including Pandit Ravi Shankar.Pandit Kumar Bose has the rare distinction of highly appreciated performance with Zubin Mehta's Philharmonic orchestra besides several symphony orchestras conducted by Pt. Ravi Shankar, Yehudi Menhuin, and Arnovich in England, Italy, China and other countries. His duet with Prof. Semurani (Thumba player) of Iran at an International Seminar in 1974 at Holland and as a member of an orchestra India Festival Moscow (1988) was highly appreciated by the audience.

Pandit Kumar Bose is also a very skillful percussionist and plays several drum instruments including Sri-khole, Pakhwaj, Dholak, Nal, Banga-Kanga. He was the Assistant Music Director of Mrinal Sen's globally acclaimed film "GENESIS" with the music director Pt. Ravi Shankar.

His two brothers – Jayanta Bose a reputed lyrist, composer, harmonium soloist and singer, and Debojyoti Bose, a noted sarodia & music director, both are carrying the musical heritage neatly.

DEBOJYOTI BOSE

Debojyoti Bose naturally inherits an unstained musical acumen, for he was born in a family of passionate musicians, on the 20th day of December 1962 at Kolkata - the citadel of Indian Classical Music. His father Pandit Biswanath Bose, disciple of Late Pandit Kanthe Maharaj of Benaras and his mother Smt. Bharati Bose, a keen Sitar player and a disciple of Mian Davir Khan, Ustad Mustaq Ali Khan and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, sowed the seed of music in him by imparting the early lessons. His elder brother Pandit Kumar Bose, a celebrated Tabla Nawaaz of international repute, also gave him the fillip to venture into the world of music. Debojyoti has been pursuing his art with an effortful spontaneity. Although he feels akin to Tabla, Sarod has been his passion since history infancy. He received vocal guidance from Sri Jayanta Bose, his second brother, a vocalist of Bishnupur Gharana. He has received talim in Sarod for over twenty years from Ustad Amjad Ali Khan of Senia Banghas Gharana. Also he has received vocal guidance from Pandit Rajan and Sajan Mishra.

In 1981, he received Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan Scholarship from Sriram Bharatya Kala Kendra, Kal-ke-Kalakar award from Benaras Hindu University 1984. He was felicitated in 1989 by Rabindra Bharati University Calcutta. Awarded 'Anandalok Award' for being the best Music Director of 1999.

Debojyoti has performed at Dover Lane Music conference (Calcutta), Kal-Ke-Kalakar (Mumbai), Sarod festival (Delhi), Saptak (Ahmedabad), Sangeet Natak Academy (Chennai and Hydrabad), Tansen Samaroho (Gwalior). Toured with Sangeet Research Academy. He has visited United States in 1989 and 2000, performed in Minneapolis, Chicago, Boston, Santiago, Los Angeles, New York and other places.
